Mistakes to avoid when learning a language (and how to correct them!)
Nobody’s perfect, especially when it comes to learning a language! But some mistakes can slow your progress. Here are the most common and our tips for avoiding them.
Translate word by word
❌ Say “I have 15 years” instead of “I am 15 years old” in English.
💡 Tip: learn whole expressions rather than translating each word separately.
Afraid to talk
❌ Waiting to be “perfect” before daring to express yourself.
💡 Tip: get started! Mistakes are part of learning. The more you practice, the more you progress.
Neglecting pronunciation
❌ Reading a language without ever listening to how it’s spoken.
💡 Tip: listen to podcasts, watch videos and imitate native speakers.
Learning vocabulary without reusing it
❌ Memorize word lists without ever using them in context.
💡 Tip: write sentences with these new words or use them in conversation.
Not regular
❌ Study for 3 hours one day, then nothing for a week.
💡 Tip: 10-15 minutes a day is better than a big effort once a week!
And now it’s your turn!
At CLL, our courses help you avoid these mistakes and progress faster through effective practice.
