How can I assess my language progress?
Evaluating your progress in learning a language is super important to see how far you’ve come and motivate you to keep going.
Here are a few ideas to help you measure your progress:
- Tests and quizzes: If you’re taking courses, you’ll probably have regular tests or quizzes.
These assessments will give you an idea of your strengths and areas to work on. - Learning diary: Keep a diary where you write down every day what you’ve learned or succeeded in doing in English.
It could be a new word, a phrase you understood in a film, or even a short conversation you had. - Language portfolio: Create a portfolio of your work, projects and achievements in English.
This will give you a concrete idea of your progress and help you set goals for the future. - Self-assessment: Reflect on your skills in the different language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) and assess yourself.
Be honest with yourself, but also forgiving.
It’s normal to make mistakes – that’s how we learn! - Conversations with native speakers: If you have the opportunity to speak with native English speakers, try to measure your ability to understand and express yourself in real-life situations.
Being able to communicate in everyday situations is an excellent indicator of your progress. - Feedback from teachers: Don’t hesitate to ask your teachers for feedback on your progress.
They’ll be able to give you personalized advice on how to keep improving. - Set goals: Set yourself clear, achievable goals.
Whether it’s learning a certain number of words per week, watching a film in English without subtitles, or holding a conversation for 10 minutes, having goals will enable you to measure your progress in concrete terms.
Don’t forget that learning a language is an ongoing process, and that it’s normal to progress at your own pace.
Every little bit counts, so congratulate yourself on your successes and keep working hard!
You’re on the right track, keep up the good work!
