My child mixes languages: good or bad?

Do you hear your child say “I want a cake now!” and worry? Don’t panic! Children exposed to several languages often switch from one to the other, and this is a normal stage in their learning.

Why do they mix languages?

The bilingual brain is under construction 🧠: the child picks from his existing vocabulary to express himself as best he can.
He experiments 🎭: alternating languages allows him to test his knowledge and hone his skills.
It doesn’t last ⏳: over time, he’ll learn to distinguish each language well and use them at the right time.

How can we support him?

💡 S tay consistent: if you speak English with him, continue without alternating with French.
💡 Value his efforts: encourage him rather than systematically correcting him.
💡 Expose him more: the more he hears the language in different contexts, the more he’ll know how to use it correctly.

At CLL, we reassure parents about these natural phases and help children to structure their learning gently.
